A tax-exempt pooled investment vehicle maintained by a bank or trust company, available only to qualified retirement plans such as 401(k)s and pension plans. CITs function similarly to mutual funds but often have lower fees because they face less regulatory overhead. They are not available to individual retail investors outside of retirement plans.
