Excess Contribution

Compliance

Any amount deposited into a retirement account that exceeds the legal contribution limits set by the IRS. Excess contributions must be corrected—typically by withdrawing the excess plus any earnings—by specific deadlines to avoid penalties. For IRAs, a 6% excise tax applies annually on excess amounts that remain in the account.
