Lump Sum

Distributions

A single, complete payment of an entire account balance or benefit at one time, rather than through periodic payments. Taking a lump sum from a retirement account triggers immediate taxation on the full amount (for pre-tax funds) and may push you into a higher tax bracket. Lump sums can be rolled over to another retirement account to defer taxes.
