Recharacterization

Contributions

Changing the type of an IRA contribution from one category to another—such as from Roth to Traditional or vice versa—before the tax filing deadline (including extensions). This was previously allowed for conversions as well, but the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated the ability to recharacterize Roth conversions starting in 2018. Contribution recharacterizations are still permitted.
