An emergency withdrawal from a 401(k) plan permitted by the IRS for "immediate and heavy" financial needs, such as medical expenses, preventing eviction, funeral costs, or certain home repairs. Unlike loans, hardship withdrawals cannot be repaid to the plan. They are subject to income tax and may incur the 10% early withdrawal penalty if under age 59½.
