Pre-Tax Contributions

Contributions

Money contributed to a retirement account before income taxes are calculated, reducing your taxable income for the year. The contributions and their earnings grow tax-deferred until withdrawal, at which point they're taxed as ordinary income. Pre-tax contributions are beneficial if you expect to be in a lower tax bracket during retirement.
